Park Rapids, MN — May 19, 2026 — CHI St. Joseph’s Health has awarded $22,500 in philanthropic grants to nonprofit organizations in the communities it serves in the Park Rapids area. The grants, part of the CommonSpirit Health Community Health Improvement Grants program, are specifically designed to address pressing health disparities and significantly enhance the health and well-being of vulnerable and underserved populations in our community.

The grant program directly supports initiatives that improve community health, advance health equity, and enhance vital local services through targeted charitable contributions. Collaborating 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations applied to receive grant funds to address significant issues identified in the hospital’s community health needs assessment. These needs include improving access to childcare and supporting the quality of life for the elderly so they can remain in their homes.

“Here at CHI St. Joseph’s Health, we believe that fostering a healthier future extends beyond the walls of our hospitals and clinics,” said Ben Koppelman, President, CHI St. Joseph’s Health. “These Community Health Improvement Grants are a direct reflection of our commitment to addressing the vital needs of our community, supporting access to critical services like improved childcare and ensuring our seniors can thrive in their homes. By partnering with dedicated local non-profits, we are helping to build a stronger foundation for the well-being of all individuals and families in the Park Rapids area.”

“The Community Health Improvement Grants are a tangible example of how CommonSpirit Health is living its mission and investing to address our communities’ demonstrated health needs,” said Michael Bilton, System Director, Community Health/Community Benefit. “By financially supporting and in many cases actively partnering with local organizations in the communities served by our hospitals, we are able to help strengthen prevention, access to care, and vital services for people in crisis.”

This local initiative by CHI St. Joseph’s Health is part of a broader commitment by CommonSpirit Health, which awarded a total of $15 million to 329 organizations nationwide.

The following local organizations received grants to support program activities between April 2026 and March 2027:

Living at Home of the Park Rapids Area — $11,250

By Dr. Megan Gilmore – CHI St. Joseph’s Health Weight Management Center

Deciding to have weight loss surgery can be a big step, especially if you’ve struggled with your weight for a long time. People often hear stories or ideas about this surgery that aren’t quite true. Let’s clear up some common misunderstandings about weight loss surgery and see who it can really help.

Weight Loss Surgery is the “Easy Way Out.” Many people think surgery will quickly solve everything and that you won’t have to work hard at eating healthy or exercising.

This is not true! Weight loss surgery is a powerful tool to help you lose weight by changing how your body digests food. But it’s only the start of a new journey! You have to make big changes to how you eat and exercise for the rest of your life. It’s not easy – it’s a huge commitment.

You Can Eat Whatever You Want After Surgery (Just Smaller Bites). Some people think that as long as you eat tiny amounts, you can still have candy or unhealthy foods.

Partially true. We learn to avoid all-or-nothing thinking. However, your stomach will be much smaller, so you can eat less. But what you do eat becomes even more important. You need to choose healthy foods, especially foods with protein, like chicken or beans. You should avoid sugary foods or greasy foods, as they can make you feel very sick (they call this “dumping syndrome”). You also have to take vitamins every day because your body won’t absorb nutrients as easily. It’s all about choosing smart, healthy foods.

Weight Loss Surgery is Dangerous. All surgeries have some risks, but some people think weight loss surgery is riskier.

The truth is… While there are always risks with surgery, weight loss surgery is now as safe as common surgeries like getting your gallbladder removed. Being very overweight can cause many serious health problems like heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Often, the health problems from being overweight are much more dangerous than the surgery itself. This surgery can actually help you live a longer, healthier life!

You’ll Just Gain All the Weight Back. People sometimes worry that even after surgery, they’ll end up gaining all the weight back later on.

Not usually! While some people might gain a little weight back over time, most people who have weight loss surgery keep a lot of it off for many years. To keep the weight off, you need to keep up with your healthy habits and check in with your medical team. It’s an ongoing journey, and with proper help, you can keep the weight off for good.

Weight Loss Surgery is Just for Looking Good. Some people think this surgery is only for making you look thin or “perfect.”

The main reason people choose weight loss surgery is to improve their health and quality of life. Weight loss surgery is a medical procedure to help people who are very overweight and have serious health problems because of it. The main goal is to make you healthier, help you live longer, and feel better overall. Patients often see their diabetes go away, their breathing improves, blood pressure gets better, and their joint pain gets much less severe.

So, Who Can This Surgery Help, and How Does It Work?

Weight loss surgery can be life-changing for people who:

Have obesity.

May also have other health problems like diabetes, sleep problems, high blood pressure, or bad joint pain.

Have tried many other ways to lose weight without long-term success.

Are ready to make big, lasting changes to their diet and lifestyle, and are willing to work with doctors, dietitians, and other experts.

How Weight Loss Surgery Helps:

Smaller Stomach: The surgery makes your stomach much smaller, so you can’t eat as much food at once. This helps you feel full faster.

Changes Hunger Hormones: This is a cool part! The surgery can change the natural chemicals in your gut that tell your brain when you’re hungry or full. This can make you feel less hungry and fuller for longer. It can also help your body use sugar better.

Better Health: Because of these changes, conditions like type 2 diabetes often improve, sometimes even before you lose a lot of weight!

Addresses Healthy Habits with a support team: The surgery gives your body a boost, and working with a team makes it easier to use the tools to enjoy a healthy lifestyle such as eating healthier or following an exercise plan.

Better Life: Beyond losing weight, people often have more energy, can move around better, have less pain, feel better about themselves, and can do things they couldn’t do before.

At CHI St. Joseph’s Health Weight Management Center, Dr. Megan Gilmore and her team are here to help. We have surgeons, food experts, counselors, and nurses who will guide you every step of the way.

Did you know that April is Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month? You might have seen people wearing a red tulip, which is the special flower for Parkinson’s. But what exactly is Parkinson’s? Let’s find out together!

What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Imagine your brain like the control center for your whole body. It sends messages to your muscles, helping you walk, talk, smile, and even eat food.

Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive condition that slowly affects a tiny part of your brain responsible for producing a special chemical. This chemical is like a messenger that helps your body move smoothly. When you don’t have enough of this messenger, your brain has a harder time sending those clear signals to your muscles.

What Does it Look Like?

Since the brain isn’t sending messages perfectly, people with Parkinson’s might have some changes in how they move. Here are some things you might notice:

Shaking hands or fingers: This is called a tremor, and it’s one of the most common signs.
Moving a bit slower: Sometimes it takes longer to get up from a chair or to walk across a room.
Stiff muscles: Their arms or legs might feel a bit stiff, making it harder to bend or stretch.
Balance problems: They might feel a little wobbly when they’re walking.
Changes in their voice: Their voice might become softer or more monotone (like singing the same note all the time).
It’s important to remember that Parkinson’s is different for everyone. Some people have very mild signs, and others have more noticeable ones.

Why is Awareness Important?

When we learn about Parkinson’s, we can:

Understand more: It helps us be kinder and more patient with people who have it. If someone is moving slowly, we know it’s not because they’re trying to waste time, it’s because their body is having a tougher time.

Support each other: Knowing about it helps us support families and friends who are dealing with Parkinson’s. Maybe we can offer to help carry groceries or open a door.

Parkinson’s is a tough challenge for many people, but with understanding and support, we can make a difference.

At CHI St. Joseph’s Health, we recognize that exercise can help slow the progression of the disease and improve symptoms. So this April, we want to spotlight our unique Parkinson’s Exercise & Wellness Program, featuring two nationally recognized classes: PWR!Moves and Rock Steady Boxing.

PWR! Moves (which is short for “Parkinson Wellness Recovery”)

PWR! Moves is all about getting people to make their movements BIG and POWERFUL again! It’s like reminding your brain that it can still send strong, clear messages to your muscles.

There are four main types of PWR! Moves, and they each help with something important:

PWR! Up (Stand Tall!): This helps people stand up straighter! Sometimes Parkinson’s can make them feel a bit hunched over.

PWR! On (Shift Your Weight!): This helps with balance, so they don’t feel wobbly. It’s like learning how to shift your weight side to side before taking a big step!

PWR! Over (Twist and Turn!): This helps with twisting and turning, like when you look behind you or even just turn over in bed. It helps keep your body flexible.

PWR! Out (Reach and Step!): This helps with reaching for things and taking big, clear steps. It’s like reaching for a high-five or stepping over an obstacle.Rock Steady Boxing is a special kind of exercise that uses moves from boxing training to help people with Parkinson’s. It’s not about fighting other people; it’s about fighting the symptoms of Parkinson’s!

Our PWR!Moves classes are led by our certified instructors, Kelly Yoder (Physical Therapist Assistant) and Michele Knoblich (Occupational Therapist), who bring expertise and passion to every session.

Rock Steady Boxing

Rock Steady Boxing is a specialized exercise program that uses boxing movements to help people with Parkinson’s. It’s not about fighting other people; it’s about fighting the symptoms of Parkinson’s!

March is here, and beyond ushering in spring, it brings a crucial message we simply can’t ignore: It’s Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month!

At CHI St. Joseph’s Health, we’re committed to promoting health and well-being in our community, and understanding colorectal cancer is a vital part of that commitment. This month, we’re dedicated to shining a spotlight on this preventable and treatable disease that affects millions worldwide.

What is Colorectal Cancer?

Colorectal cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the large intestine (colon) or the rectum. It often starts as small, noncancerous (benign) clumps of cells called polyps that form on the inside of the colon. Over time, some of these polyps can become cancerous.

While it might feel like a daunting topic, the good news is that colorectal cancer, when caught early, has a very high survival rate. This is precisely why awareness and proactive screening are so incredibly important.

Why is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month So Important?

There are several key reasons why we dedicate an entire month to this disease:

It’s the Second Leading Cause of Cancer-Related Deaths: Sadly, colorectal cancer claims many lives each year. But this doesn’t have to be the case!

It’s Highly Preventable: With regular screening, precancerous polyps can be identified and removed before they have a chance to turn into cancer.

Early Detection Saves Lives: When colorectal cancer is found at an early stage, before it has spread, the 5-year survival rate is over 90%.

Increased Incidence in Younger Adults: While traditionally seen as a disease of older adults, we are unfortunately seeing a worrying rise in colorectal cancer diagnoses among people under 50. This makes awareness even more critical for all age groups.

Empowering Through Knowledge: Understanding the risks, symptoms, and screening options empowers individuals to take control of their health.

What Can You Do? Let’s Talk About Screening!

The single most effective way to prevent colorectal cancer and detect it early is through regular screening. Many people defer screening out of fear or embarrassment, but the truth is, the potential benefits far outweigh any discomfort.

Who should be screened? The general recommendation for people at average risk starts at age 45. However, if you have a family history of colorectal cancer or certain risk factors, your doctor may recommend starting earlier.

What Can You Do? Let’s Talk About a Life-Saving Procedure: The Colonoscopy!

The single most effective way to prevent colorectal cancer and detect it early is through regular screening. While there are various screening methods available, at [Your Organization’s Name/Website Name], we advocate for the significant benefits of a colonoscopy. Many people defer screening out of fear or embarrassment, but the truth is, the preventative power of a colonoscopy far outweighs any temporary discomfort.

Why the Colonoscopy is the Gold Standard:

A colonoscopy isn’t just about detecting cancer; it’s a powerful tool for prevention. Here’s why it’s so highly recommended:

Direct Visualization: A colonoscopy allows your doctor to directly and thoroughly examine the entire colon and rectum. This means they can see abnormalities that other tests might miss.

Polyp Removal on the Spot: This is the game-changer! During a colonoscopy, if your doctor finds any precancerous polyps (small growths that can develop into cancer over time), they can often remove them immediately. This literally prevents cancer from ever developing, making it a truly preventative procedure.

Early Cancer Detection: If cancer is present, a colonoscopy can detect it at its earliest, most treatable stages, when the chances of a full recovery are highest.

Accuracy: It is the most accurate screening method for detecting both polyps and cancer.

Who should get a colonoscopy? The general recommendation for people at average risk starts at age 45. However, if you have a family history of colorectal cancer or certain other risk factors, your doctor may recommend scheduling one even earlier. Don’t wait – have this crucial conversation with your healthcare provider.

Know the Symptoms – Don’t Ignore Your Body!

While a colonoscopy is our best defense, it’s also important to be aware of potential symptoms. If you experience any of these, please speak to your doctor immediately, regardless of your age or screening history:

A persistent change in your bowel habits (diarrhea, constipation, or a change in the consistency of your stool).

Rectal bleeding or blood in your stool.

Persistent abdominal discomfort, such as cramps, gas, or pain.

A feeling that your bowel doesn’t empty completely.

Weakness or fatigue.

Unexplained weight loss.

Let’s Make a Difference This March!

This Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, let’s commit to educating ourselves, our loved ones, and our communities.

Talk to your doctor: Discuss your personal risk factors and make a plan for your colonoscopy.

Share this information: Spread the word about the importance of awareness and life-saving colonoscopies.

Encourage loved ones: Remind friends and family to schedule their colonoscopy when it’s their turn.

Advocate for early detection: Support initiatives that promote accessible screening.

Colorectal cancer is a silent threat, but with increased awareness and proactive measures like a timely colonoscopy, we can turn the tide. Let’s work together to prevent this disease and save lives.

At CHI St. Joseph’s Health, we believe that informed patients are empowered patients. When it comes to something as vital as cancer prevention, knowledge truly is power. Regular check-ups and screenings are not just appointments; they are crucial steps in safeguarding your long-term health, offering the best chance to catch potential issues early, when treatment is most effective.

Think of your screening schedule as a personalized health roadmap. While national guidelines provide a valuable framework, your unique journey – your age, personal health story, and family history – will always shape the specific recommendations from your CHI St. Joseph’s Health provider. We’re here to partner with you every step of the way.

Let’s explore a general guide to cancer screenings, designed to help you understand what might be recommended at different stages of life.

Your Cancer Screening Compass: A Journey Through the Ages

Starting Strong: Ages 18-24 Even in your late teens and early twenties, prioritizing preventive health sets the stage for a lifetime of well-being.

The Annual Check-up: A foundational physical exam helps establish a baseline for your ongoing health.

Skin Savvy: Get into the excellent habit of monthly self-checks for any new or changing spots on your skin.

For Our Men: Monthly testicular self-checks are an important part of personal health awareness.

For Our Women (starting at 21): This is when Pap tests typically begin to screen for cervical changes, in addition to monthly breast self-checks.

Building Resilience: Ages 25-39 As you navigate busy careers and family life, consistent screenings remain essential.

Physicals: Continue with regular physical exams, typically every three years for many individuals.

Cervical Health (Women): HPV or co-testing (Pap/HPV) often starts in this age range, occurring every 3-5 years, alongside continued monthly skin and breast self-checks. For those with higher risk factors, discussions around mammograms may begin.

Men’s Health: Maintain regular physical exams and monthly skin and testicular self-checks.

Focused Prevention: Ages 40-65 This period introduces some critical screenings that significantly impact early detection.

Annual Physicals become Key: This is often the time when yearly physicals are highly recommended for everyone.

Mammograms (Women): Typically beginning in the 40s, regular mammograms (every 1-2 years) are vital for early breast cancer detection.

Colon Health (Men & Women): Colon cancer screening often begins at age 45. Your provider will discuss various options, including colonoscopy, stool DNA tests, or FIT tests, to find the best approach for you.

Prostate Health (Men): Around age 50, discussions with your provider about PSA (prostate-specific antigen) testing often begin.

Ongoing Skin Checks: Continue these monthly, as skin cancer risk can increase with age.

Cervical Health Update (Women): HPV or co-testing continues every 3-5 years, often until age 65 if results are normal.

Sustaining Health: Ages 55-74 Consistency is key in these years, continuing essential screenings.

Maintaining Momentum: Continue with breast, prostate, and colon screenings as recommended by your CHI St. Joseph’s Health provider.

Lung Health Consideration: If you are a current or former heavy smoker, this is a crucial time to ask your doctor about low-dose CT scans for lung cancer screening.

Skin Vigilance: Don’t forget your monthly skin checks!

Longevity Care: Ages 66+ Your health journey continues, and so does our commitment to your well-being.

Personalized Plan: Your physician will advise on the continuation of colon, mammogram, or prostate screenings, tailoring recommendations to your current health status and history.

Comprehensive Wellness: Staying up-to-date on yearly physicals and Medicare Wellness visits, along with monthly skin checks, remains important for overall health management.

Beyond Screenings: Everyday Choices for Cancer Prevention

While screenings are paramount, your daily habits are powerful allies in reducing cancer risk. Integrate these practices into your life:

Say No to Tobacco, Vaping, and Limit Alcohol: These are a few of the biggest modifiable risk factors for cancer.

Stay Active, Maintain a Healthy Weight: Regular physical activity and a balanced weight significantly contribute to prevention.

Nourish Your Body: Prioritize a diet rich in colorful fruits, vegetables, adequate protein and fiber.

Sun Protection is Year-Round: Use SPF 30+ sunscreen every day, not just at the beach, to protect against skin cancer.

In response to this urgent need, CHI St. Joseph’s Health committed $5,000 to bolster hunger relief efforts in our local communities.

While federal SNAP benefits are now back on schedule, this commitment underscored the critical role local support plays during times of crisis and ongoing need. The funds were distributed throughout all our communities, each of which experienced increased demand during this challenging time, including:

Hubbard County Food Shelf

Menahga Area Food Shelf

Akeley/Nevis Community Food Shelf

Walker Area Food Shelf

Guided by its mission to make the healing presence of God known by improving the health of the people it serves, especially the most vulnerable, CHI St. Joseph’s Health’s contribution aimed to mitigate the effects of food assistance delays. This donation was coordinated as part of the organization’s broader efforts to address the social determinants of health, including food insecurity, housing, and access to care.

As the Hospice Care Manager, I often encounter misconceptions about what hospice truly is. Let me assure you, it’s not about giving up; it’s about embracing life to its fullest, no matter the circumstances. It’s about ensuring that every moment counts, filled with comfort, connection, and cherished memories.

Beyond the Medical: A Holistic Approach to Care, Our Perspective

At its heart, hospice care is a profound act of compassion. We see it daily in the eyes of our dedicated team. It goes far beyond just managing physical symptoms, offering a comprehensive and holistic approach that addresses the unique needs of the whole person – body, mind, and spirit. As we detail on our Hospice Care Services Page, this includes:

Expert Pain and Symptom Management: Our team of doctors, nurses, and specialists are equipped with the latest knowledge and resources. They tirelessly alleviate pain and discomfort, ensuring peace and ease during a challenging time.

Emotional and Spiritual Support: We’ve witnessed firsthand the profound impact our compassionate counselors, social workers, and chaplains have. Facing a life-limiting illness can be emotionally and spiritually taxing, and their presence offers a listening ear, guidance, and comfort to patients and their families, often unlocking a surprising sense of peace.

Practical Assistance and Respite for Families: Caregiving can be incredibly demanding. A core part of our mission is to offer practical support. This means helping families navigate the complexities of care, providing essential respite, and even assisting with daily tasks so they can focus on simply being with their loved one.

Bereavement Support: The journey doesn’t end with a loved one’s passing, and neither does our commitment. We are proud of our comprehensive bereavement programs which extend our embrace to families, offering solace and guidance as they grieve. It’s a testament to our long-term commitment to their well-being.

Why Hospice Care Matters: A Testament to Human Dignity, Lived Daily

Hospice care champions the fundamental right of every individual to live their final chapter with dignity, respect, and comfort. We see it every day in the empowered choices patients make and the peace they find when they can spend their precious time surrounded by love, free from the burdens of unrelenting pain and anxiety.

During Hospice Care Month, I want to shine a spotlight on the unsung heroes who embody this mission every single day:

Our compassionate nurses, CNAs, and aides: They are the heart of our hands-on care, providing comfort with a gentle touch and unwavering kindness.

Our dedicated physicians and nurse practitioners: They bring their medical expertise and deep empathy to each patient’s bedside, making critical decisions with care.

Our empathetic social workers and counselors: They are masters of difficult conversations, offering invaluable emotional support and guidance.

Our spiritual care providers: They offer solace and meaning, respectfully embracing diverse beliefs and traditions.

Our amazing volunteers: Their selfless acts of companionship and kindness make an immeasurable difference to patients and families alike.

And, of course, the families: They open their homes and hearts to us, allowing us to be a part of their intimate and sacred journeys. It is a privilege we do not take lightly.

Debunking Myths: Understanding the True Nature of Hospice, From Experience

From my vantage point, it’s vital to dispel common misconceptions about hospice. Hospice is not:

Giving up hope: It’s about shifting the focus of hope from a cure to comfort, quality of life, and meaningful connections in the present.

Only for the last few days: We’ve seen countless patients benefit from hospice for months, genuinely enhancing their quality of life for a significant period.

Only for cancer patients: Hospice is available for anyone with a life-limiting illness, regardless of diagnosis. Our team is trained to care for a wide range of conditions.

A financial burden: Hospice care is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance plans, because we believe everyone deserves this level of care.

PARK RAPIDS, MN (NOV. 12, 2025) – Last year, you helped us bring comfort and peace to patients and families facing life’s greatest challenges. Your generosity shines as a beacon of hope in our community, and we are deeply grateful.

This year, as we reflect on the profound impact of CHI St. Joseph’s Health Hospice Care, we are honored to share the story of Gary Wolff . Gary was more than just a beloved community member; he was a testament to the power of human connection, a man who truly saw the best in everyone.

If you were lucky enough to know Gary, you know what we mean. He was the teacher who made his classroom a sanctuary, the coach who inspired confidence, and the neighbor who always offered encouragement. To his devoted wife Marsha of 54 years, his children Eric and Sarah, and his cherished grandchildren Macy, Attly, Elin, and August – he was the
bedrock of their lives, always reminding them of their worth. Gary loved coaching, fi shing, hunting, and creating art through painting, pottery, and carving decoys. He was a natural caretaker and cheerleader, endlessly
encouraging his wife and family in every step of their lives. Gary was a light; outgoing, energized by people, and truly saw the best in everyone he met.

“Everyone has something to contribute.” This was Gary’s simple, yet profound philosophy. From the classroom to the playing fi eld, he ensured every student and athlete knew they mattered, fostering a belief in themselves that lasted long after they left his side. He believed in people, cheered for the underdog, and never met a stranger – only future friends.

Gary built a legacy not of wealth or accolades, but of relationships, encouragement, and a lifetime filled with laughter and stories. He touched countless lives, whether he was teaching, coaching, throwing pottery, carving decoys, or simply making someone feel like they belonged.

Gary’s vibrant spirit faced its greatest challenge when he was diagnosed with cancer on Thanksgiving in 2024. Though he fought with strength and optimism, by early 2025, after a fi nal chemotherapy appointment revealed the treatment was no longer eff ective, he and his family made the diffi cult decision to discontinue further treatment. The very next day, they called hospice to help. Gary passed away peacefully on February 2, 2025 with his family by his side.

It was in these moments, when comfort, dignity, and unwavering support were most needed, that CHI St. Joseph’s Health Hospice Care team surrounded them with care. As Marsha shared, “hospice just took a big weight off of us,” bringing ease and the comfort of knowing Gary was being taken care of with compassion and kindness. The last crucial week before Gary passed, our hospice staff became truly invaluable. They not only provided expert physical care but also compassionately prepared the family for what was to come, helping them recognize the signs of Gary’s transition. They took care of everything, emphasizing comfort and profound support. They truly acted as “angels” who were always “only a phone call away”. Marsha was able to gather all the family together as Gary transitioned, thanks to the insights and support provided by the hospice team.

Just as Gary saw the inherent worth in every individual, Hospice Care embodies that same belief. We strive to create an environment where every patient feels valued and every family finds solace, allowing them to focus on what matters most: spending precious time together, free from pain and fear.
