Shedding Light on Migraines: It’s Migraine & Headache Awareness Month!

Posted on:

June 22, 2026

June is National Migraine & Headache Awareness Month, a timely reminder to acknowledge the millions of people who live with these often debilitating neurological conditions. More than just a “bad headache,” migraines can profoundly impact daily life, affecting work, relationships, and overall well-being.

At CHI St. Joseph’s Health Primary Care Clinic, we understand the significant burden migraines and headaches can place on individuals. This month, we want to not only raise awareness but also remind our community that effective treatment and relief are within reach.

Migraines vs. Tension Headaches: What’s the Difference?

While many of us have experienced a headache, migraines and tension headaches are distinct. Understanding these differences is key to getting the right diagnosis and treatment.

  • Tension Headaches: These are the most common type of headache. They usually feel like a constant, dull ache or pressure around the head, often described as a tight band squeezing the scalp. Tension headaches can be triggered by stress, fatigue, or muscle strain, and while uncomfortable, they typically don’t involve other symptoms like nausea or light sensitivity.
  • Migraines: Migraines are far more complex. They are often characterized by throbbing pain, usually on one side of the head, and are frequently accompanied by other symptoms such as:
    • Nausea and/or vomiting
    • Extreme sensitivity to light (photophobia)
    • Extreme sensitivity to sound (phonophobia)
    • Aura (visual disturbances like flashing lights or blind spots that occur before or during the headache phase for about 25-30% of sufferers). Migraines can be triggered by a range of factors including hormonal changes, certain foods, stress, weather changes, and lack of sleep. The pain can be so severe that it interferes with daily activities and can last for hours or even days.
