DEXA Scan: Advanced Bone Density Assessment at CHI St. Joseph’s Health

At CHI St. Joseph’s Health, we are committed to providing the most advanced and comprehensive diagnostic imaging services. We are proud to offer bone density scanning using Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA), a safe, painless, and non-invasive procedure used to measure bone mineral density (BMD).

What is a DEXA Scan?

A DEXA scan is the gold standard for diagnosing osteoporosis and assessing your risk of fractures. It uses low-dose X-rays to measure the density of your bones, typically in the hip and spine. The scan provides valuable information about the strength and health of your bones, helping your doctor make informed decisions about your care.

How Does a DEXA Scan Work?

During a DEXA scan, you will lie comfortably on a padded table while the DEXA scanner passes over your body. The scanner emits two low-dose X-ray beams, which are absorbed differently by bone and soft tissue. By measuring the amount of X-rays that pass through your bones, the scanner can accurately determine your bone mineral density. The entire procedure usually takes between 10 and 20 minutes.

Benefits of a DEXA Scan:

  • Early Detection of Osteoporosis: A DEXA scan can detect osteoporosis before a fracture occurs, allowing for early intervention and treatment to prevent further bone loss.
  • Fracture Risk Assessment: The scan helps estimate your risk of future fractures, enabling you and your doctor to take steps to reduce your risk.
  • Monitoring Treatment Effectiveness: If you are already being treated for osteoporosis, a DEXA scan can monitor the effectiveness of your treatment and help determine if adjustments are needed.
  • Painless and Non-Invasive: The procedure is painless and does not require any injections or incisions.
  • Low Radiation Exposure: DEXA scans use very low doses of radiation, significantly less than a standard chest X-ray.
  • Accurate and Reliable Results: DEXA scans provide accurate and reliable measurements of bone density, allowing for confident diagnosis and treatment planning.
  • Improved Quality of Life: By identifying and addressing bone health issues early, a DEXA scan can help improve your quality of life and reduce the risk of debilitating fractures.

Who Should Consider a DEXA Scan?

  • The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends DEXA scans for:
  • Women age 65 and older
  • Men age 70 and older
  • Anyone who has broken a bone after age 50
  • Women of menopausal age with risk factors for osteoporosis
  • Postmenopausal women under age 65 with risk factors
  • Men age 50-69 with risk factors
  • Anyone taking medications that can cause bone loss
  • Anyone with certain medical conditions associated with bone loss

What to Expect During Your DEXA Scan:

  • Preparation: You may be asked to avoid taking calcium supplements for 24 hours before the scan. Wear comfortable clothing without metal zippers, belts, or buttons.
  • Procedure: You will lie on a padded table while the technologist positions the scanner. You will need to remain still during the scan.
  • Results: Your DEXA scan results will be reviewed by a radiologist, and a report will be sent to your doctor. Your doctor will discuss the results with you and recommend appropriate treatment options if needed.

Take control of your bone health. Talk to your doctor about whether a DEXA scan is right for you. For information about scheduling a DEXA scan at CHI St. Joseph’s Health, please call 218-616-3153.
